Universal Theatre Apartments is a building that will stand the test of time. This is a development that comprises of 17 apartments, 8 two storey and 9 single storey, circulating around a central natural light filled undercover atrium. The car parking to this residential development has been allocated on the top of the ground floor with access to it via a concrete vehicle ramp. The challenge for Di Manno Enterprises was to demolish the existing three theatre spaces that were located on the first and second level and build the apartments whilst the commercial tenants on the ground floor were still occupying their tenancies and operating their businesses as usual. The existing fabric of the external of the building was retained as two and three levels were added behind the existing facades. The finished result is a functional building that has been tightly held by its multiple owners and provides the illusion that its current form is its original use. It’s a building that Fitzroy can be proud of.
